Microchipping can save your dog. One of the most significant advances in pet safety over the past several decades has been the introduction of microchip identification. Every year, millions of dogs become lost because they escape from their yard, slip out of an open door, or become separated from their owners during travel or natural disasters. While collars and identification tags remain an important first line of defense, they are not foolproof. Tags can wear out, collars can break, and both can be intentionally removed. A microchip provides permanent identification that remains with your dog for life.

From Tattooing to Microchipping

Before microchips became widely available, tattooing was one of the most common methods of permanently identifying dogs. Veterinarians or breeders would tattoo an identification number inside a dog’s ear or on its inner thigh. While this method was useful, it had several disadvantages.

Contrary to popular belief, the chip does not contain GPS tracking technology or actively transmit your pet’s location. Instead, it serves as a permanent electronic ID that can be read whenever a scanner passes over the chip.

When a veterinarian or shelter scans your dog, the scanner reads the chip’s identification number. That number is then used to retrieve the owner’s contact information from the registration database, allowing the pet to be returned home quickly.

How Is the Microchip Implanted?

The microchip is usually implanted beneath the loose skin between a dog’s shoulder blades using a sterile needle. The procedure is very similar to receiving a routine vaccination and usually takes only a few seconds.

Most dogs experience only brief discomfort during implantation and require no anesthesia. Once inserted, the chip becomes surrounded by normal body tissue, helping keep it in place throughout the dog’s lifetime.

Can the Microchip Move?

Many pet owners worry that the chip may become lost or move to another part of the body. While minor migration is possible, modern microchips are specifically designed to remain in place. Even if a chip shifts slightly beneath the skin, trained professionals scan the dog’s entire body, making it highly unlikely that a functioning chip will be missed.

If a scanner cannot detect a chip, the most common causes include:

  • An older microchip that some modern scanners may have difficulty reading.
  • A damaged or defective scanner.
  • A very rare chip malfunction.

Fortunately, today’s universal scanners can read nearly all modern microchips used in veterinary medicine.

Safety of Modern Microchips

When microchips were first introduced, a few laboratory studies raised concerns about tumors developing near implanted chips in certain rodents. These findings led to understandable questions among pet owners.

Since then, millions of dogs and cats have been microchipped worldwide, and extensive veterinary experience has shown that modern microchips are considered extremely safe. Serious complications are very rare, and the benefits of permanent identification greatly outweigh the minimal risks associated with implantation.

The most common side effects are temporary soreness at the injection site or mild swelling that resolves within a few days.

Domestic vs. International Microchips

Pet owners should understand that there are different types of microchips available.

Some chips are designed primarily for use within the United States, while others comply with international standards used in many countries around the world. Internationally compliant chips generally follow the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standard, allowing them to be read by scanners used in many countries.

If you plan to:

  • Travel internationally with your dog,
  • Export puppies,
  • Show dogs overseas, or
  • Sell dogs to buyers in other countries,

an ISO-compatible microchip is often required. These chips typically cost more than domestic-only options but can save considerable time and expense if international travel is anticipated.

Not every veterinary clinic stocks international microchips, so ask your veterinarian in advance if an ISO-compliant chip is needed for your situation.

Choosing a Microchip

Several well-known companies manufacture pet microchips. Two of the best-known brands in North America have historically been AVID and HomeAgain (formerly associated with Schering-Plough Animal Health). Today, numerous manufacturers produce high-quality chips that meet international standards.

Your veterinarian can recommend a reputable microchip that is compatible with local shelters and international requirements if needed.

Registration Is Essential

Implanting the microchip is only the first step. The chip is virtually useless unless it is properly registered.

After implantation, the owner must register the chip with the manufacturer’s database or another approved pet recovery registry. Registration typically includes:

  • Owner’s name
  • Home address
  • Telephone numbers
  • Email address
  • Emergency contact information
  • Pet’s name
  • Breed
  • Color
  • Date of birth (if known)

Whenever you move or change your phone number, remember to update your registration information. Many lost pets cannot be reunited with their owners simply because the contact information associated with the microchip is outdated.

What Age Should Puppies Be Microchipped?

Most veterinarians recommend microchipping puppies at around eight weeks of age, although the procedure can often be performed earlier depending on the puppy’s size and health. Many breeders choose to microchip puppies before they go to their new homes so that each puppy has permanent identification from the very beginning.

The new owner should then update the registration information immediately after taking ownership.

Microchips Do Not Replace Collars

Although microchips are extremely reliable, they should not replace a collar with an identification tag. A visible tag allows anyone who finds your dog to contact you immediately without visiting a veterinarian or shelter for scanning.

The best protection comes from using both forms of identification together:

  • A collar with current identification tags.
  • A registered microchip with up-to-date contact information.
