Sooner or later, every kennel owner discovers that a garden hose alone just isn’t enough. Whether you operate a large commercial kennel, run a small breeding program, or simply keep several dogs at home, maintaining a clean and sanitary environment is essential. At some point, you will find yourself shopping for a power washer.
Like many people, you may initially think that a power washer is something you’ll only use occasionally. After all, how often can a kennel really need deep cleaning? The answer is probably more often than you expect. Even if you only use a power washer once or twice a month, those cleanings quickly become one of the most important parts of your maintenance routine.
The mistake many kennel owners make is assuming that because they won’t use a power washer every day, they should buy the cheapest model available. On the surface, this seems logical. Why spend extra money on a machine that will sit in the garage most of the time?
Don’t Go Cheap
Over the years, we have experimented with numerous cleaning solutions. We started with simple hose attachments that promised “power washing” performance at a fraction of the cost. While these attachments may work for lightly rinsing a patio or watering plants, they generally don’t provide enough pressure to effectively clean kennel floors, walls, fencing, and other surfaces that accumulate dirt, mud, hair, and waste.
When those failed to meet expectations, we moved on to inexpensive electric power washers commonly sold at big-box stores. At first glance, these units appear to be a bargain. They are lightweight, inexpensive, and easy to store. However, our experience was that many of the lower-end models simply weren’t built for the demands of kennel cleaning.
One of the first problems we encountered was durability. The hoses on many budget electric models tended to kink easily, which restricted water flow and made operation frustrating. Worse yet, some hoses cracked or split after relatively little use. In many cases, replacement hoses were difficult to find or surprisingly expensive.
Leaks were another common issue. Connections that seemed tight would drip continuously during operation. What starts as a minor annoyance can quickly become a major frustration when you’re trying to clean a large kennel area. Instead of focusing on the cleaning task, you find yourself stopping repeatedly to adjust fittings, untangle hoses, or troubleshoot equipment.
The biggest disappointment, however, was performance. Kennels present unique cleaning challenges. Dried mud, food residue, urine buildup, algae, and other contaminants often require substantial water pressure to remove effectively. Many inexpensive electric units simply lack the power needed to make the job efficient. What should take thirty minutes can easily turn into several hours of work.
Eventually, we decided to spend a little more money and move up to a gas-powered pressure washer. Specifically, we purchased a Honda-powered 2600 PSI model. While 2600 PSI is considered relatively modest in the world of gas-powered pressure washers, it represented a significant upgrade from the entry-level machines we had been using.
Get a Reliable Powerwasher
The unit started easily, delivered consistent pressure, and dramatically reduced cleaning time. Areas that previously required repeated passes could often be cleaned with a single sweep. Concrete kennel floors looked better, fencing was easier to maintain, and stubborn dirt was removed with far less effort.
In many ways, the 2600 PSI machine was more power than we actually needed for routine kennel maintenance. However, it represented an important step up in overall quality and reliability. The components were sturdier, the hoses were more durable, and the entire machine felt designed for real work rather than occasional light-duty use.
For most kennel owners, that’s an important lesson. Sometimes the next model up isn’t about getting more power—it’s about getting better equipment. Spending a few hundred dollars more upfront can save countless hours of frustration over the life of the machine.
It’s Not a Toy
A pressure washer is not a toy. The stream of water produced by a gas-powered unit can cause serious injury if used carelessly. Always keep dogs safely away from the cleaning area while operating the machine. Even a brief contact with the spray can cause significant injury to an animal. The same caution applies to people.
Many years ago, I made the mistake of reaching into the spray stream to move an object that was in the way. It seemed harmless enough at the time. The result was immediate and painful. The water stream literally blasted the skin off the back of my hand. It wasn’t a life-threatening injury, but it was a painful lesson that I have never forgotten.
Pressure washers are powerful tools capable of removing paint, cutting through grime, and cleaning concrete. Human skin offers very little resistance to that kind of force. Always wear appropriate footwear, eye protection, and avoid directing the spray toward yourself or anyone else.
In the end, a good power washer becomes one of the most valuable pieces of equipment a kennel owner can own. It helps maintain cleanliness, improves sanitation, reduces labor, and keeps your facility looking professional. While it may be tempting to save money by purchasing the least expensive option available, experience has taught us that investing in a quality machine pays for itself many times over.
